Candidate Assessment

Timescales and challenges

There can be challenges in achieving best practice during candidate assessment. The Equal Representation Coalition appreciates that screening processes are often run to tight deadlines and are led by volunteers. Sometimes elections are called at short notice which means that the vetting process is held very quickly. Ensuring equal representation can be difficult in these circumstances.

To reduce the risks of a process which creates barriers for those in protected groups; it can be beneficial to think ahead. You may want to consider planning actions which prioritise equal representation in your processes. For example:

●       Having a pool of already-screened potential candidates;

●       Having multiple opportunities for people to be vetted or a rolling programme of candidate assessment throughout the year;

●       Widely advertising dates of assessment in advance to enable maximum participation.
